Top 10 trending phones of week 45

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max reigned our trending chart for a long time and in a weird twist it was taken down by a couple of rumored phones part of Xiaomi's Redmi lineup. The Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 9 5G appeared in a couple of major leaks and clearly got a lot of people excited. Combined with the iPhone 12 Pro Max hype dying down a bit it pushed the new Apple flagship down to third place. It will certainly hope to do better next week when its market availability starts. The newly announced Huawei nova 8 SE vaulted to fourth, while the Poco X3 NFC regained some of its old...

Flashback: weird phones from unexpected brands part 2 - Pepsi, Onkyo, Kodak, Red

Last month we looked at some phones from unexpected brands, but that wasn’t nearly all of them. Today we’ll look at some more oddball phones from companies whose business is quite different (sometimes completely unrelated to electronics). Pepsi P1 Is Pepsi okay? Regardless of your soft drink preferences, you probably didn’t expect Pepsi to make a smartphone. There were two phones, actually, the Pepsi P1 and P1S, and they tried launched in China with a crowdfunding campaign on JD.com. The Pepsi P1 and P1s tried to launch with a crowdfunding campaign That plan backfired on the...

New Google app could help providers block phone functions if you miss installment payments

A strange app has surfaced on the Google Play Store, an app from Google called “Device Lock Controller”. The app was quietly released back in June and has around 10 downloads as of this reporting. Basically, the app is designed to let creditors, banks, carriers (whoever you owe money to) limit function on the device if you fall behind on payments. The Xbox Series S has 364 GB available for games, the rest of the 512 GB SSD is reserved

The new Xbox Series consoles will start shipping to fans next week on November 10. However, one lucky redditor got their Series S console early and confirmed that there is a significant chunk of storage dedicated to system functions. The Xbox Series S has a 512GB SSD built in, of which 364GB are available for game installations. Similarly, the Series X console has a 1TB SSD, of which 802GB are available. So that’s about 30% of memory reserved on the S and 20% on the X. This reserved storage is for the OS as well as the Quick Resume feature, which needs to store gigabytes of game...

Huawei P Smart 2021 in for review

The latest arrival to our office is the Huawei P Smart 2021 smartphone, also sold at some markets as Huawei Y7a. It is an entry-level smartphone that lacks Google services, but brings other promising features like a 48MP camera, a massive battery with fast charging support, and a 6.67” screen with Full HD+ resolution. The retail box of the phone consists of a Huawei SuperCharger that lets you top the phone at up to 22.5W. The technology was initially introduced with the company flagships and it is good to see it trickle to the lower echelons. We have to go through our usual battery...

iPhone 12 cameras can only be replaced by official Apple technicians, 12 Pro is unaffected

Back when Apple added a fingerprint reader to the iPhone 5s, it made it impossible to replace by anyone other than an authorized technician. That makes some sense – a bogus reader may circumvent security. But over the years more and more components have become difficult to replace. During its teardown and testing of the iPhone 12, iFixit found that taking the camera out and replacing it with an identical module from another phone causes issues. And not just the error report you get when you swap screens (“Unable to verify that this iPhone has a genuine Apple display”). No, this looks...

OnePlus 9 is headed to Verizon and T-Mobile, apparently

If you're in the US and are wondering which carriers are going to offer the upcoming OnePlus 9, that may be coming sooner than expected, then wonder no more. The enterprising folks over at XDA Developers have discovered, through a deep dive into the OxygenOS code, that the OnePlus 9 is in fact headed to both Verizon and T-Mobile. On the other hand, the OnePlus 9 Pro seems to only be on the way to T-Mobile, with Verizon seemingly foregoing the more expensive option. The OnePlus 8 was also offered by Verizon There are very good hints about all of this in the OxygenOS code, but...

LG Wing lands at AT&T on November 6

Today AT&T has finally announced some launch details for the LG Wing on its 5G network. The phone was unveiled in mid-September, and in the US it went to Verizon first, but AT&T and T-Mobile were always meant to follow. Now we have the skinny on AT&T's plans. The LG Wing will be available from the carrier starting on November 6, for a full retail price of $1,050. You can split that over 30 months, resulting in a monthly installment of $35. Or, if you have a qualifying device to trade-in, you can purchase the Wing for as low as $11.67 per month, which adds up to a total of just...

Amazfit Bip S Lite Review

Huami launched the original Amazfit Bip a couple of years ago and it immediately got a somewhat large and loyal following with its spectacular battery life. It's no surprise then that the company followed it up with the Bip S this year that we already reviewed and now yet another version. A toned-down model of the Bip S, dubbed Amazfit Bip S Lite is with us today and while it misses out on some features of the Bip S it manages to bring down the cost too, so does it offer more bang for your buck? Let's try to answer that with this review. Amazfit Bip S Lite specifications ...

Samsung Galaxy F12 (or F12s) is on the way to India, new leak shows

Earlier this month, Samsung made the Galaxy F41 official for the Indian market. This is the first smartphone in the F series, and weirdly enough it's just a rebranded Galaxy M31. So much for Samsung's strive to simplify its midrange offering stables, then. We have Galaxy A, M, and now F, and we're wondering why J had to die way back when. Anyway, the F line is only getting started, and a new phone is soon going to join the F41 in India. This will have the model number SM-F127G, and based on Samsung's naming conventions this means it will launch as either the Galaxy F12 or F12s. Also...

Huawei Mate 30E Pro makes quiet debut with Kirin 990E chipset

Huawei had a big day today, announcing the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+, and Porsche Design Mate 40 RS. As it turns out, however, those four just weren't enough, and so the company quietly unveiled a fifth phone in its home market, China. This is the Huawei Mate 30E Pro, which is now up for reservation in the country. It's basically identical to the Mate 30 Pro from last year, save for one difference: the new model is powered by a new chipset, the Kirin 990E. This is itself an improved version of the Kirin 990 that made its debut in the Mate 30 Pro. The Kirin 990E in the...

Netflix will give users in India free access for a weekend

Netflix's user growth has been slowing down recently, and the company is now looking for ways to make more people interested in subscribing. As part of a test, it is said to be offering free access to users in India for a weekend. This should somehow help expand its reach in the country, according to a top company executive. Netflix recently stopped offering a free one month trial to those interested in subscribing to its online streaming service, so this free weekend in India test would at least in part aim to make up for that. Greg Peters, COO and Chief Product Officer at...

nubia Watch in for review

The futuristic Amazfit X wearable with its curved screen doesn't stand unchallanged. Today we welcome the nubia Watch that has a panel stretching even further in both directions. It arrived on sale earlier this month for $219/€219/£189 and is available in over 40 markets. Here are our initial impressions of the wearable before going all-in with the full review. The smartwatch looks rather unique - at first, it looks like it can bend at will but the curves are actually fixed so fit will vary from user to user. The appearance of the nubia watch is also puzzling. We can say the...

Our vivo V20 hands-on video is up

The vivo V20 got announced for the Indian market a few days ago, and the intriguing Android 11-running mid-ranger has made it to GSMArena towers soon after. We've already given you our spontaneous first impressions from when it arrived at the office - but in text form. While we're working hard on our full review of the V20, we thought a quick video rundown of its main features would be nice to have. So, without further ado, here it is: The vivo V20 is definitely interesting in its own right, with its upper-midrange specs and premium-looking design, and it's due to go on sale in just...

vivo V20 in for review

Just today, vivo brought the vivo V20 to the Indian market. Priced at INR 24,990 and INR 27,990 for the 8/128GB and 8/256GB variant, respectively, the vivo V20 is seemingly a great value proposition, but we'll now get the chance to try it and see if that's indeed the case. The unit comes packed with all the accessories you could want - a 33W charger, USB-A to USB-C cable, USB-C headphones and a complimentary silicone case. The phone features a 6.44-inch 1080p AMOLED display, which makes the V20 a nicely compact phone. The slim 7.4mm body and the reasonable 170g weight make for a...

Kirin 9000 AnTuTu result shows promising GPU results, 3.13 GHz CPU

While Huawei is still reluctant to officially unveil the Kirin 9000 chipset that will power its upcoming flagships, AnTuTu and Geekbench results have leaked in sufficient quantities for an early look at the performance we can expect. Let’s start with the GPU, a Mali-G78 (core count unknown). It scores 287,000+ points, well ahead of the current Android champ, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra's Snapdragon 865+, which posted a score of 258,171. However, it’s slightly behind the Exynos 1080 graphics score. AnTuTu scores: Kirin 9000 • Exynos 1080 Huawei has the first mover advantage as the...

Unannounced Oppo A53s listed on Amazon – images, specs and price in toll

This is a bit of an odd situation, but not a unique one on the modern smartphone scene. In what is technically a “leak”, a still unannounced Oppo A53s can now be found on Amazon DE. The listing includes a basic set of specs, pretty detailed images of the device, as well as a pre-order price of €189 and an official release date of October 13. In any other scenario, this would be a very interesting and bountiful leak. However, as listed, this Oppo A53s seems to absolutely identical to the regular Oppo A53, which was launched late last month in India. So, we can assume that either the...

A proper Poco F1 successor is coming to India at some point in the future

Xiaomi's Poco sub-brand started off with a bang with the Poco F1, which brought some new life to the flagship killer smartphone concept first pioneered by the OnePlus One. Recently, though, Poco has been mostly rebranding other devices from the Xiaomi stable - with the one exception of the recently outed Poco X3. A lot of people have been put off by this strategy, as the F1 created different expectations around the brand. It turns out that, in the words of Poco's country director for India, Anuj Sharma, the F2 Pro wasn't a true successor to the F1. As such, this model will not be making it...
