[Interview] Galaxy Book Developers on How Next-Level Battery Power is Raising the Bar for the Laptop Market

From offices to cafés, and airport lounges to libraries, people can be seen using laptops to work, study and watch videos from wherever they are. To enable this kind of usability, laptops must be underpinned with reliable, high performance power options, meaning that battery lifetimes and charging speeds have had to evolve to keep up with demand.

(From left) Engineers Sunghoon Kim and Jehwan Lee, who developed the battery for the Galaxy Book series, and product planner Hyemi Sung

In an environment in which laptops must continually overcome their limitations to meet new sets of needs, the Galaxy Book S, Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion are delivering high-level battery performance to ensure that they are able to meet users’ needs. The batteries in the Galaxy Book series feature best-in-class specifications that improve the usability and portability of the laptops and allow them to charge faster and be used for longer.

Newsroom sat down with the developers responsible for Samsung’s battery research to hear how they went about producing a lightweight laptop that features long enough battery power.

The Slim-Down Secret – High-Density Energy Packed Into a Battery

A battery’s capacity is generally proportional to its physical size – the bigger the battery, the longer you can use the laptop. However, as laptops must offer maximized portability, their batteries cannot be allowed to become overlarge or cumbersome. Thus, the developers at Samsung came up with a solution called ‘high energy density cells’, which allow the largest possible amount of energy to be stored in a limited space. Whereas the energy efficiency of conventional batteries sits at around 650Wh/L, the new battery cells in the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion boast energy efficiency of around 700Wh/L.

Commenting on the development of the specialized battery packs, engineer Sunghoon Kim said, “We undertook several tests to find the perfect balance between weight, size and battery efficiency. With the new batteries, users can use the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion for up to 20 hours and 22 hours, respectively.”1

Another important factor in battery efficiency is charging speed, which becomes especially important when users are about to go out and find themselves low on battery. To prevent users from being inconvenienced in this way, the developers designed a quick charging algorithm and a large-capacity 65W adaptor that allows the usual charging time of 120 minutes for a 100% charge to be shortened to 90 minutes.

For charging versatility, the ‘easy charging’ feature also allows users to use a smartphone charger and supplementary battery when they need a charge urgently. Engineer Jehwan Lee said “With smartphone chargers being unified with USB-C® functionality across the board, we were able to implement easy charging in the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion. We tested the easy charging function with a wide range of different supplementary batteries, and ensured that it would facilitate quick and convenient charging when users need it.”

Get More Out of Your Laptop With Long-life Algorithm

According to a Samsung internal customer trend survey, users expect their laptops to have an average lifetime of around four years. As a laptop’s battery is a consumable component that gets worn down quickly, extending battery life is key to increasing the overall lifetime of the laptop.

Samsung’s long-life algorithm has contributed to after-use battery capacities being effectively doubled, with the batteries in the Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion now able to retain roughly 80% of their original capacity after charging and discharging 1,000 times. Engineer Jehwan Lee, who was responsible for designing the batteries’ power circuits, explained that “When a battery is aging, it sustains added stress and deterioration even if the tasks it is performing remain unchanged. By monitoring the battery’s status and making adjustments to the charging voltage and current flow when the number of charging cycles is increased, the long-life algorithm contributes to delaying battery deterioration.”

Lee also explained that, “Your laptop’s battery may wear down faster if you keep it constantly connected to the charger. If you keep your laptop plugged in all the time, we recommend activating the ‘Battery Life Extender +’ feature, which prevents the battery from being charged above 85% of its capacity.”

Realizing Wireless PowerShare in a Laptop

A unique feature of Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion is that they include the Wireless PowerShare feature. Smartphones, wearable devices, wireless earphones and other Qi-compatible devices can all be charged wirelessly when they are placed on the laptop’s touchpad, removing the need for users to carry multiple chargers with them. Hyemi Sung, who was responsible for product planning for the Galaxy Book series, said, “As this is the first laptop series to feature ‘Galaxy’ in its name, we wanted to incorporate a function that would prove useful for users who use multiple Galaxy devices in their day-to-day lives.”

However, incorporating such a feature did not prove straightforward for the developers. Beneath their touchpads, laptops feature a mesh-structured circuit board that detects touch motions, and this aspect of the hardware design obstructed the developers’ ability to incorporate wireless charging into the laptops. Engineer Jehwan Lee explained, “We needed to expand the fine mesh structure in order to improve the efficiency of the wireless charging feature, but doing so decreased the touch accuracy of the touchpad. Following extensive testing done in partnership with the touchpad division, we were eventually able to achieve a balance that maintains functionality in both areas simultaneously.”

Producing a Safer Battery

Adding convenience often causes other problems to arise, and chief among them in the case of the Galaxy Book series was that of heat. A battery that receives larger quantities of power more quickly will naturally heat up faster, thus requiring the Galaxy Book developers to come up with measures to prevent overheating.

The battery sits beneath the touchpad, which includes the wireless battery sharing feature. The developers innovated to prevent overheating while battery sharing is activated

The batteries in the newly released Galaxy Book laptops consist of four cells, all of which are installed with double and triple protection to prevent the spread of heat. Engineer Jehwan Lee explained that, “A temperature sensor located near the charging circuit monitors heat levels, while the system further prevents overheating by alternating between quick charging when the power is off and normal charging when the power is on.”

Engineer Sunghoon Kim explained that “Safety is the most important factor when it comes to developing batteries. All the batteries developed by the Mobile Division undergo an 8-point safety check2 and are designed to remain safe in a wide range of thermal stress environments.”

The battery is an enormously important component when it comes to portable electronic devices. Speaking to this, engineer Jehwan Lee remarked that, “As people expect to be able to use their electronic devices for extended periods of time these days, we’re giving our brand an edge by providing devices with extended battery life.”

Finally, engineer Sunghoon Kim shed some light on the team’s plans for the future, saying that, “Whereas the performance of many contemporary laptop batteries will start to decline after around 1,000 charges, we’d like to develop a battery that maintains performance after 3,000 charges.”

Electrocardiogram Monitoring Cleared for Galaxy Watch Active2 by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety

Samsung Electronics announced today that the Electrocardiogram (ECG) function of the Samsung Health Monitor app has been cleared by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The ECG feature uses advanced sensor technology on the Galaxy Watch Active2,1 and will enable users to measure and analyze their heart rhythm for irregularities indicating Atrial Fibrillation (AFib).2

AFib is the most common abnormal heart rhythm, affecting an estimated 33.5 million people worldwide, with 5 million new patients diagnosed annually.3 It can significantly increase the risk of complications, including blood clots, heart failure and stroke. Every year, over 16 million people will develop a stroke, of which AFib and high blood pressure (hypertension), are known to be the leading causes.4

The Samsung Health Monitor app also recently received MFDS clearance for blood pressure (BP) measurement, meaning users will be able to conveniently measure both ECG and BP, giving them a better picture of their overall health. Together, the ground-breaking ECG and BP technology will help users manage and improve their health by providing on-demand measurements.

Strengthening Hardware Security with Galaxy S20’s Secure Processor

From password logins to blockchain keys, many of us regularly store valuable information on our smartphones. While this enables us to enjoy more convenience, it also makes our mobile devices a target for malicious actors.

We want users to enjoy our technology and innovations without a worry, which is why Galaxy devices come with a wide range of industry-leading security solutions to protect personal data. Samsung Knox protects, isolates, and secures data from the hardware chip up, while Secure Wi-Fi provides a safe environment for internet browsing on public wireless connections. And in case of loss or theft, the Find My Mobile service enables users to remotely locate the smartphone, as well as backup and protect data stored on the device.

For the Galaxy S20, we continued to build on this solid security foundation. At the heart of the enhanced system is the secure processor, which is engineered to ensure your data is protected even against advanced hardware attacks.

Enhanced Hardware Security

Just like the way locksmiths can use tools to get past a locked door, malicious actors can manipulate components (physical attacks), provoke hardware errors (fault attacks), or analyze heat and electromagnetic emissions (side-channel attacks) to breach smartphone security. These attacks, also known as hardware attacks, can only happen if the hacker gets hold of the device physically.

The Galaxy S20’s secure processor is Samsung’s solution to counter against hardware attacks. The component is a physical chip that provides an isolated space to protect confidential data in the device. In addition to the continuous scrambling and encrypting of confidential data, it employs a physical shield to guard against physical attacks. The component can also detect invalid voltage or temperature changes and is equipped with security algorithms to thwart side-channel attacks.

An Extra Level of Protection for Your Data

The secure processor protects a wide range of valuable data on your smartphone, starting from the lock screen. It ensures that your lock screen PIN, pattern, or password are not susceptible to guesses by making it almost impossible for attackers to reset the error counter, which monitors the number of failed unlock attempts.

In addition to lock screen data, the secure processor can also process blockchain private keys, which are similar to banking passwords for crypto-currency wallets. The component even supports Strongbox Keymaster, meaning it provides hardware protection for private keys or sensitive data on third-party apps.

As a part of Samsung Knox’s multi-layered security platform, the secure processor will not only keep your data protected on the go but also enable safer, more convenient mobile experiences in the future.

Get an Inside Look at the Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge Part 2: Sweeper Technology

Keeping internal components clean is essential for maintaining the performance of a smartphone. The challenge of keeping dust and dirt out is even greater for foldable devices, as their designs include microscopic gaps between the body and the hinge.

In this second installment of a two-part series on the Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge, we will take a look at another key innovation which helps to protect the device from dust and dirt – the sweeper technology.

Sweeper Technology

In designing the Galaxy Z Flip’s hinge, Samsung engineers not only had to account for the spaces between the body and the hinge, but also meet three specific conditions: Elasticity (to account for shifts in the gap size); long-lasting flexibility (the hinge is tested to withstand 200,000 folds1); and slimness (to keep the device’s sleek form factor).

Finding a solution that protected against particles and met those conditions meant dozens and dozens of failed prototypes. But then, one of Samsung’s top engineers noticed that the way fibers were used in vacuum cleaners was similar to what was required for the Hideaway Hinge. The sweeper fibers were not only pliable enough to cover all the gaps as the smartphone folds and unfolds, they also remained flexible after long-term usage.

Now let’s take a look at how Samsung engineers overcame all those challenges and what the outcome of their efforts looks like.

Tips for Keeping Your Smartphone Clean

Just as thorough hand washing and other hygienic practices have become key aspects of our daily lives, keeping our smartphones clean should also form a key part of our self-sanitation routines given just how much we interact with our mobile devices.

So, how exactly can you continue to use your smartphone and stay hygienic? Read on for some suggestions as to how you can effectively and safely clean your smartphone.

Why Do You Need to Clean Your Smartphone?

According to a study by global consultancy firm Deloitte, American users view their smartphones around 14 billion times a day, with each individual user picking up their phone 52 times a day on average. As we enter a phase of telecommuting and remote communication, these numbers are only set to increase.

“Our studies show us that viruses can survive on plastic or metal surfaces for up to 2 or 3 days,” highlights Dr. Doo-Ryeon Chung, Director of Center for Infection Prevention and Control at Samsung Medical Center. “In order to use your smartphone safely, it is imperative that you keep your device clean.”

Best Practice Smartphone Hygiene

The first thing to remember when looking to keep your Galaxy device clean is not to use general cleaners, compressed air sprays or disinfectant and bleach-based products. While these might be useful in keeping communal spaces around the home hygienic, these solutions can peel off or damage the oleophobic coating layer over your smartphone’s display that shields the screen from fingerprint smudging.

In order to keep enjoying the best experience with your Galaxy smartphone after cleaning, be sure to fully power down your device and remove its case, cables and other accessories. Once you have done this, use a lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe down the exterior of the device.

If needed, you can use a small amount of distilled water or disinfectant, such as a hypochlorous acid-based (50-80ppm) or alcohol-based (over 70% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol) product – but always apply these to your microfiber cloth, not directly to your phone, and be sure to avoid getting any liquid in your phone’s openings. Dampen your cloth with disinfectant and gently wipe the front and back of your device to cleanse it.

You can use the same methods as above for cleaning the watch face of your Galaxy Watch once you have removed its straps. While such disinfection methods should be avoided for leather or rubber surfaces, they are suitable for glass, ceramic and metal surfaces, such as the display of your Galaxy smartphone and the watch face of your Galaxy Watch.

Get an Inside Look at the Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge Part 1: Dual CAM Mechanism

With Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung pushed mobile engineering to its limits and reimagined the foldable category. Now, users can open their device and stand their screens at different angles. From taking selfies to video chatting with friends hands-free, the Galaxy Z Flip offers an entirely new kind of smartphone experience, and it’s all possible because of the one-of-a-kind Hideaway Hinge.

When you hear the word hinge, you probably think of the simple component that lets a door open and close. The Hideaway Hinge on the Galaxy Z Flip is so much more than that. It’s an innovation marvel and the backbone of the device – it quite literally holds the entire smartphone.

Designing the hinge was no easy feat. Samsung had to tackle some huge problems to ensure that it was ready for consumers.

First, Samsung had to invent a hinge that is strong, stable and offered a smooth experience, without adding any extra bulk. Second, Samsung had to come up with a way to prevent small particles, like dust and sand, from entering the tiny gap between the hinge and screen.

To solve both of these problems at once, Samsung engineers developed a patented Hideaway Hinge technology that combines two completely new, groundbreaking innovations: the dual CAM mechanism and sweeper technology. In this first installment of a two-part series, we will explore the first innovation of the Hideaway Hinge: the dual CAM mechanism.

Hideaway Hinge’s Dual CAM Mechanism

The ridge-shaped dual CAM mechanism is a key component of the Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge and revolutionary, gradual folding experience. Because of this innovative technology, the Galaxy Z Flip can open, close and stand on its own at different angles. It’s the difference between a light switch that can only go on and off and a dimmer that offers many more degrees of control.

In addition, the precisely crafted dual CAM mechanism keeps the Hideaway Hinge slim, and the Galaxy Z Flip small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Here’s how the dual CAM mechanism works:

6 Useful Things Your Galaxy S20’s Camera Can Do for You

The Galaxy S20 has been receiving a lot of attention for its innovative camera experience granted by such capabilities as Space Zoom and Single Take, as well as its super high-resolution sensors, video capture in stunning 8K resolution and other leading functions.

But beyond just offering these innovative camera capabilities to ensure your memories are captured just as they happen, the Galaxy S20’s camera also features a range of capabilities developed to help you capture, view, edit and share your photos and videos as seamlessly as possible, from taking photos and managing your gallery to sharing your moments with friends.

Read on to learn more about these useful features and how they can help you enhance your Galaxy S20 camera experience.

Capture Freely

Custom Filter lets you create and customize your own personal photo filters using existing pictures, including those you have taken using the Camera app. You can now personalize your shots to match your own aesthetic and color tone preferences, both before and after taking pictures.

Furthermore, for the most seamless video experience possible, you can switch between the front and rear cameras whilst recording a 4K UHD video – meaning you’ll never miss a chance to capture your priceless moments from every angle. Whilst recording a video, select the ‘camera switch’ icon on the bottom right of the screen to change between the front and rear cameras.

View Easily

With the Clean View feature, the Gallery app can group up to 100 consecutive images into one bundle based on when they have been shot for easy viewing. You can then easily review each bundle and select your favorite picture to serve as the group’s thumbnail.

The Gallery also offers enhanced search capabilities. Compared to the previous iteration, the improved search now shows a more diverse array of results when you search by time or place keywords. If your search term results in nothing to display, your S20 will suggest similar search terms to help you find what you are looking for, with greater ease.

Edit & Share Quickly

Highlight reel creates a dynamic video clip out of your favorite photos and videos. You can either simply enjoy this curated selection of your best snaps or further personalize your reel by amending the duration, adding text, changing the background volume or music and more.

To help you swiftly share high-resolution photos and videos with your friends, Samsung has provided users with Quick Share. It allows you to easily see which users are nearby so that you can select and share high-resolution pictures and videos with multiple people – just by tapping on the icon1.

Featuring advanced speaker and microphone technology, all-day battery1 and new customizable sound, navigation and fitting options, Galaxy Buds+ allow users to enjoy studio-quality audio on their terms.

A Next-Generation Sound Experience

With sound by AKG, Galaxy Buds deliver an innovative audio experience for on-the-go users, and Samsung is raising the bar once again for sound quality with the new Galaxy Buds+. In addition to AKG sound, Samsung Galaxy Buds+ are equipped with an innovative 2-way speaker system, complete with an added tweeter for richer treble and a woofer for powerful bass sounds. For those who rely on their wireless headphones for phone calls and video conferencing, Galaxy Buds+ are fitted with three mics—one inner and two outer—for crystal clear voice capture. The exterior microphones use beamforming to hone in on your voice and tune out background noise so that you can always be heard, no matter where you are.

With improved Ambient Sound2, users can tune out the outside world when they want to or amplify background noise when they need to stay alert by selecting from a range of new settings including low, medium, high or extra high.

No Outlet? No Problem

There’s nothing more disappointing than when wireless headphones run out of battery mid-podcast and there’s not an outlet in sight. Thanks to a powerful 85mAh battery, Galaxy Buds+ are the perfect companion for those who like to listen when on the go.

Galaxy Buds+ offer eleven hours of music playback,3 and you can double that to 22 hours just by placing them in the 270mAh wireless charging case – perfect for on-the-go listening. When users in a hurry need to recharge, quick charging capabilities can generate 60 minutes of playback in just three minutes by using wired, wireless, or device-to-device charging with Wireless Powershare4.

Stay in Control Easier than Ever

All-new customizable touch capabilities on Galaxy Buds+ allow users to stay in control even without their smartphone in-hand. A single tap can play or pause music; a double tap can skip to the next track or answer a phone call; and the touch & hold command can be customized to whatever other action users need the most.

For Spotify listeners, with Galaxy Buds+, you can continue listening to your favorite music instantly with a single press. Through a simple ‘Tap & Hold’ gesture, Spotify plays recommended music, curating based on your preferences.

Connectivity Meets Simplicity

Galaxy Buds+ make it easy for users to enjoy their wireless headphone experience across devices with just one simple set-up. Once paired with a Galaxy smartphone, Galaxy Buds+ are automatically available on all other devices tethered to the same Samsung account5.

Redefining how we experience sound, Galaxy Buds+ provide a simpler, more seamless way to listen. Now, the new earbuds are also iOS compatible so you can enjoy the latest features across more devices.

Galaxy Buds+ are always on, always connected, and always clear—so that you’re never left waiting for the content you’re craving.

A Complete Guide to the Galaxy Z Flip’s Foldable UX

Samsung Electronics flipped the smartphone world on its head with the launch of its second foldable device, created to offer users a convenient and versatile foldable experience: the Galaxy Z Flip. Featuring a first-of-its-kind glass display that folds into a compact and stylish form factor, the company’s latest groundbreaking smartphone offers a whole new mobile experience. One that demands an equally inventive UX.

Follow along as we examine how Samsung optimized the Galaxy Z Flip’s UX to make it easy for users to get the most out of the device.

So Long, Smartphone Stands

Picture this: While on vacation, with your smartphone mounted on your tripod, you carefully frame a shareworthy photo, only to find that the angle of your just-snapped shot isn’t quite right. So you find another spot, set up again, and hope that you take your pick in time to capture that scenic sunset in all its glory.

With Flex mode on the Galaxy Z Flip, you can forget tripods. All you need to do to set up a spectacular photo or video is fold your smartphone to the angle you need and place it wherever you like. It’s capable of sitting upright on its own, and stays open at various angles. So there’s nothing holding you back from finding the perfect perspective for capturing the moment. When posing for a photo in front of a magnificent skyline, open the device to a wide angle. For portrait photography, narrow the angle to place your subject front and center.

The stability provided by the Galaxy Z Flip’s freestop folding system, together with the camera’s Night mode, makes the smartphone a game-changer for low-light photography. Capturing vivid nighttime shots is simple when you have a camera that’s capable of standing perfectly still, and minimizes noise to bring out details in dark settings. The camera also makes it easy to record mesmerizing hyperlapse videos after dark with its Hyperlapse function and Night mode.

Add Some Flex to Your Phone

Designed exclusively for the Galaxy Z Flip’s unique form factor, Flex mode completely reimagines the mobile experience to allow users to do more, from multiple angles, hands-free. It’s activated as soon as the user folds or unfolds their phone, and when the device is free-standing, it automatically splits the display into two four-inch screens. Content is visible on the top half, while controls are presented on the bottom.

The Galaxy Z Flip features several Flex mode-optimized apps1 right out of the box, with plenty more on the way. Take the camera, for example. When the user launches the Camera app, they’re instantly presented with a preview of their shot on the top half of the screen, with controls to switch cameras and modes and manage settings accessible at the bottom. When viewing photos and videos in the Gallery, your content is displayed on top, while the bottom half of the display acts as a touchpad of sorts that lets you zoom in and out and cycle through photos with a simple pinch, swipe or flick.

Content creators can utilize the Galaxy Z Flip’s camera in Flex mode to make sure that their photo or video is the perfect aspect ratio for the type of content they’re producing. The top half of the screen lets users view their shot or recording in a wide range of aspect ratios, including 1:1, 9:16, 3:4, 9:22 and 16:9.2 The Galaxy Z Flip supports to record 16:9 video, which, when recorded while the device is free-standing, is presented on the top half of the screen. The ability to take immersive 16:9 video from virtually any position makes it easy to record shareworthy clips and upload them online.

It’s not just photography that benefits from Flex mode’s versatility. The ability to place your phone upright and video chat hands-free adds a new layer of comfort to connecting with friends. Samsung worked closely with Google to optimize Google Duo for the Galaxy Z Flip to make users’ experience with the video chatting app even more convenient. As a result, the device allows users to instantly initiate video calls with people they’d like to contact, simply by tapping on the Google Duo icon in the Phone, Contacts or Messages app. When making their call, they’ll also be able to do things like send fun AR Emojis and switch to wide-angle mode.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Going forward, Samsung will continue to collaborate with developers and partners to dream up new ways to optimize apps for Flex mode, and unlock ever more convenient and creative uses for foldable devices.

A Multitasking Machine

The Galaxy Z Flip’s unique form factor and foldable UX make multitasking seamless. The ability to fold the device’s spacious 6.7-inch screen in half adds a whole new dimension to managing two apps with Multi-Active Window. Enjoy easy access to your go-to apps by swiping left from the right side of the display and launching the completely customizable Multi-Window Tray.

The possibilities are endless. Thinking of testing out a new recipe? Watch a cooking video on the top half of the display while taking notes on ingredients and instructions on the bottom. Got your eye on a new piece of tech or clothing? Make sure you’re getting the best deal by simultaneously comparing prices from multiple sellers. The bottom half of the screen is also perfect for, for example, searching for info online on the new show you’re watching, or typing out particularly inspiring passages from the e-book you’re reading.

A Convenient Cover

One of the Galaxy Z Flip’s most versatile features is its cover display, which allows you to manage notifications, take quick selfies and more, all without unfolding your phone.

Double tap the display or press the side key to instantly view the date, time and battery status. A swipe to the left will pull up music controls, while a swipe to the right accesses the notification panel. Once the user taps a notification and unfolds the device, they’re able to pick up precisely where they left off on the main screen.

A double press of the power button will launch the Camera, which is perfect for prepping your pose before snapping a selfie. Once you and your friends have landed on a look you like and adjusted your position and background accordingly using the cover display, you can snap your shot with a press of the volume button, or by simply showing your palm to the camera. Unfolding the phone will take you straight to the Gallery, where you’ll be able to take a closer look at your photo on the main screen.

1 At launch, Flex mode-compatible apps include the native Camera and Gallery (image and video viewer) apps, as well as the Always-On Display (AOD) and Google Duo. Compatibility with more native and third-party apps will be introduced in the near future.

2 Not all aspect ratios support both images and video.

[Editorial] Dawn of a New Decade of Galaxy

Unpacked is my favorite time of year. It’s here that we set the tone for the mobile industry and we open people’s eyes to new possibilities for the future. This year is especially meaningful to me because it’s my first year at Unpacked as Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

Over my career at Samsung, I’ve had the pleasure of leading the development of mobile devices with breakthroughs that have come to define the last decade of smartphone innovation, starting with the very first Galaxy S and more recently, the Galaxy Fold. Today, I’m excited to say that we believe we are at the dawn of an inspiring new decade filled with the promise of growth and change. The growth and change for the smartphone industry, and ecosystem as a whole. As a leading player within the mobile industry, we relish our responsibility to lead next decade, empowered by experience innovation, cutting-edge technologies, and most of all, compelling products.

Fifty years ago, Samsung Electronics was founded with a clear purpose: to use the power of technology to create a better world. Driven by our commitment to break down barriers and make what some thought impossible, possible.

In 2011, we recognized that consumers were doing even more on their devices. We responded and introduced a more powerful phone with a larger screen and an S Pen to give consumers ultimate productivity on the go—the Galaxy Note. With every new device, we continued to innovate and pioneer new display, camera, and performance technologies. Last year, we created a new category with a foldable device, the Galaxy Fold.

Now, here at the start of 2020, we are excited about the opportunity to define a new era. An era that is defined not simply for innovation’s sake but to truly enable experiences that are more personal, meaningful, private and secure; that will create more intelligent connections across devices, people, businesses, and communities. This will be enabled by key advancements in the three most important technologies of our time: 5G, AI and the Internet of Things (IoT). As the leading innovator of new mobile experiences, Samsung is proud to drive the convergence of these technologies across various smart devices, including Galaxy phones, wearables and PCs.

We’ve already started bringing these new experiences to life. Through open collaboration with industry leaders, such as Google and Microsoft, we are building the robust connected ecosystem in the world. And we are working with major carriers to expand 5G services, so hundreds of millions more consumers around the world can have access to next generation networks.

It’s our responsibility and opportunity to shape the next ten years of mobile innovation, starting right now at Unpacked. No company is better suited to take on this massive challenge than Samsung.

What an exciting time for Samsung, our industry and consumers.

You will see some exciting examples of how we’re driving progress, changing the shape of the future and introducing new mobile experiences at Unpacked. I’m excited to flip the industry on its head. It’s going to be an absolutely incredible event, and I hope you’ll join me—online or in-person—for Galaxy Unpacked 2020 on Tuesday, February 11th.

Make It Your Galaxy: Customize Your Favorite Galaxy Devices with the Galaxy Store

From punch-hole displays to shimmering hues and multiple form factors, Samsung embraced individuality and creativity in its design approach. But no matter what device best suits your daily needs, you want it to suit your personal style.

Samsung makes customizing your Galaxy easy with a variety of wallpapers, fonts, themes, and watch faces available in the Galaxy Store. Here’s how you can add a personal flair to your device.

Make It Your Galaxy

Whether you’re celebrating the new year or just want to personalize your Galaxy device, the store has something for everyone. Simply open the Galaxy Store and navigate to the “My Galaxy” menu and you will find a wide range of customization options.

Themes will give your entire device a makeover with new skins for your icons, backgrounds, and even fonts.

While themes will change the general appearance of your phone, the wallpaper is simply the background image on your home screen. The Galaxy Store also features a wide variety of wallpapers to choose from to customize your home screen.

For Galaxy Watch users, the store also offers a massive library of custom watch faces to personalize your favorite wearable. Whether you want to track health stats or go with something more fashion-forward, the Galaxy Store has thousands of watch faces to choose from.

Best of 2019

Customization was popular throughout the Galaxy Store in 2019 as tech increasingly became an important part of fashion and individual expression. In February 2019, Samsung consolidated its themes and apps under the Galaxy store, which is now home to a growing number of themes and watch faces. Thanks in part to these additions, the store has also seen its customer base grow rapidly over the last year.

Last year saw a burst in popularity of the colorful and unique themes in the Galaxy Store from designers around the world. The most popular theme categories were simple, nature, colorful, and cute.

Cogul Planet Inc.’s goofy, Siba-inspired theme, Siba  Rich_Premium Free Sound Pack S10, captured the trend perfectly.

“2019 was happier because many users loved the theme I created,” said Cogul Planet Inc.’s lead designer. “We will continue to create themes that make people laugh and touch their hearts in the future.” In addition to cute characters, black and blue themes were also popular throughout the year.

The deep black and rich bronze tones of Sebastian Wolodkiewicz’s [SW] Luxury Gear theme are one such example, featuring a steam-punk aesthetic that was popular among Galaxy Store users. The black and blue trend wasn’t just limited to themes, as users also sought rich blues and dark blacks for their wallpapers.

Some designers, such as studio 1624, embraced the darker side of the trend. The studio’s Urban Rain video wallpaper turns your phone into a rain-streaked window, for those that love the melancholy of a rainy afternoon. Other designers used the color trends to create bold works of art in their wallpapers. Bergen Themes’s high-contrast, Live Colorfully HD, wallpaper was a hit in the Galaxy Store last year. Watch faces, on the other hand, focused more on health and wellness. Users preferred watch faces that allowed them to track health and wellness stats easily right from their wrist.

The MD153 New Hybrid Watch Face from Matteo Dini capitalized on this trend by allowing users to track everything they need in one watch face. Featuring a calendar, heart rate monitor, step counter, and both digital and analog clocks, it has something for everyone. Even more luxurious watch faces included health and wellness features.

Designer Tatyana Galkina went with a more luxury look for the Golden Floral watch face that was among the most popular in the Galaxy Store last year. Adorned with golden and purple flowers, the watch face allows its users to track their daily steps and heart rate in addition to the time and battery levels. Other watch faces focused on seasonal trends.

Looking for a way to personalize your own Galaxy devices? Head to the Galaxy Store to find more wallpapers, themes, and watch faces that best suit your style. The Galaxy Store comes pre-installed on all Galaxy phones and can be reached on your home screen or in the Samsung folder.
